Idli controversy: The Karnataka government has banned the use of plastic in making idli at all hotels and roadside shops in the state. The Karnataka Food Safety Department found an inquiry that 52 hotels across the state were illegally using polythene sheets to build idli. According to Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, the Health Department examined more than 250 different samples of Idli from across the state. It was found that polythene sheets were used instead of traditional cotton cloth while making idli.

It comes in contact with heat while making plastic idli. Then it leaves poisonous chemical. Chemicals emanating from plastic are found in idli. This can pose a risk of serious diseases like cancer. After this revelation, the Karnataka government has completely banned the use of plastic in making idli in all hotels across the state.

Health Minister Gundu Rao told the media, “Health department officials collected 251 samples from all over the state and sent them for investigation. Edli was first used to cook. But we have received information that plastic is being used instead of clothes in some places these days.” The minister further stated, “Therefore, our department investigated it. The use of plastic was confirmed in 52 out of 251 samples. It should not be done because plastic contains carcinogenes and it can be found in idli.”

He said that the Health Department will soon issue an official order, so that it can be ensured that it does not happen. He said that necessary action should be taken against any establishment violating the rules or any establishment using plastic sheets. He said that officials of the health department of Bangalore studied the way of making idli at various hotels and roadside shops. Also collected samples for investigation. He said that after laboratory testing, he got carcinogenic chemicals in several samples.
