India will have its own graphic processing unit (GPU) in the next three to four years. Union Railway, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information.
Vaishnav said, ‘We are working towards developing our chipset. We are widely discussed with experts. In the coming three to four years, we will have our own GPU to compete with the world. Vaishnav said these things at a press conference organized on the occasion of completion of one year of India AI Mission. In the program, the government also released the GPU portal and a non-individual data set platform-AI Kosh.
Vaishnav said, ‘Today we have a formal compute facility of 15,000 graphic processing unit (GPU), which is more than our target. More than 4,000 GPUs are in the pipeline and many more will come in the coming quarters. He said that the cost of using these GPUs after getting 40 percent profit margin is historically less than Rs 100 per hour.
It is noteworthy that India AI Mission was introduced with an initial target of 10,000 GPU. It was approved in March last year with a budget of Rs 10,738 crore.
